Oh, Joe. No Kidding.

Etc June Jaunt #1+ Deserters June Jaunt #4

I was only half joking when expressed wariness about Etc's K.L. show scheduled for next week with Pinholes, Deserters and Lightcraft. Reason being: it was in the hands of our friend, Joe Kidd.

Uncannily Etc have yet to play a show for this legendary figure of the Malaysian music scene, but not for lack of trying.

Etc was barely active the first time he was good enough to programme us for a Christmas show in 2004. And what a trip the Malaysian debut was to have been: K.L. followed by Penang on Boxing Day with beachside accommodation earmarked for proper R&R. But I never made it because I fell to a lousy flu - a very minor complaint compared to what happened to Penang the day I planned to be there. It got hit by the tsunami from the Indian Ocean earthquake.

Next was Jan 2006. After Etc's Ipoh auxiliaries Jay (from Freelove) and Aidil (Couple) had a crash course in some Etc songs, we were to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Dog with a Joe Kidd-organised gig at the much-heralded, rather swanky looking, NoBlackTie. Oh very fancy, except this live music venue didn't have the permit necessary permit to stage concerts, even though it had consistently been doing so for some time. Joe wasn't to know this. And neither did we. Until we arrived at the venue to play and found this was the day the authorities chose to make their move.

Then there was the Joe Kidd show with Etc on the bill that got cancelled after it was announced that Indonesia's Goodnight Electric were playing a free one at same time nearby. Another: Etc weren't officially told they were on a long-confirmed bill until a few days before, by which time coach and train tickets were all sold out, and bosses sticky about granting leave. New Year 07/08: dashed from Deserters' boot-breaking Apocalypse Now pontoon set towards central K.L. only to meet a police cordon at 11.30pm that blocked Etc from getting to the very centrally-located venue.

Sixth time lucky then?

Apparently not. The venue's got new management. They've cancelled all the shows previously scheduled there.
