Is Extinction the Future?

Here's a song called "Extinction" by band from San Diego:

When I read "extinction" I thought, oh no, here comes teenage angst. But, of course, it wasn't anything of the sort.

I like extremely emotional lyrics and throwaway vocals. He wasn't teenage either. Both plusses in my book.

Almost New York Art School rock, but less pretentious and with considerable added charm. An early Jonathan Richman vibe too, but more knowing.

Thanks for that.

I enjoy that this band's stuff has struck me in an era when it seems like everyone's employing all sorts of odd tricks to get ones attention. I feel lucky to have heard them quite by chance. And I'm glad their appeal endured over enough days for me to see what else I could find out about them which led me to this quote from them re: the band they've been most compared to (but claim not to have heard when they started out): “We don’t know what the fuck we’re doing. And that’s why it sounds like The Velvet Underground.”

Did someone just sum up an entire strain of music?

Yes. Of course early Jonathan Richman was completely Velvets inspired, I just hadn't gone far enough down the family tree!

Oh yes it *is* more J Richman & the Modern Lovers for to me too. Wasn't disputing that.

But I've been busting a gut over that comment about the Velvets. I find it priceless - perhaps because I brought the house down when I said it myself once, but more especially because of occasions where I thought I was playing with people who were pushing the music... but in fact it was just their ineptitude that made them sound 'new wave' until they grew into Marillion muso bores or emerged as what they were destined to be all along: U2 clones.

This one is probably more Velvets than Jojo...

Also just the right side of 'spiky' for me thank you. I like 'em. Nice looking band too.

I'm always partial to bands with cute female bass players (an early Gaye Advert obsession that never really wore off I should imagine).

I like them very much. And love that vocal style.

Cute bassists? Etc has a history of them. And then they leave for other countries to do better things.

I think The Muslims one is not with them anymore - based on the information at the band's myspace.
But she has about 3 other bands on the go. She hadn't played bass till the day before the filming I read somewhere.

And as we speak I am hearing one that's new to me called 'Beside Myself' that shows they're knowing enough to know that being clever isn't always smart: The song is here http://www.myspace.com/themuslims

Gaye Advert was from which band? Forgive me for not knowing. It's not the TV Personalities or Swell Maps or ATV. But not X-Ray Spex is it? Slits? no. Adverts? My money is on that - and not just because of the name.

So... did Budgie mess up Slits for you? I was rather enamoured of Banshees drumming / Severin bass as a nipper.

The Adverts. Black eyeliner, skinny leather jacket, what's not to love?

I loved Palmolive and early Slits. But I also love Dennis Bovell Slits too. I always think of them as two entirely different groups. Not particularly keen on them once Ari Up took over - all that self-indulgent pseudo-Rastafarianism wasn't really me.
