You thought I was making it up about the Emo Wars? Me too

The appearance of Hare Krishnas at 1:55 into the bulletin below made me think this could well be an April Fools prank. But then I remembered the strong Emo-Krishna connection and affiliations (via Shelter et al.) from back in the day. "Oh my God - they're the reinforcements..."

Next came an S.O.S. from my tearful Mexican half-cousin, Ruben, trying to get in touch with the Grunge gangs. And now I see that the LA Weekly is on the case - the City of Angels bracing itself for an influx of refugees?

As they say at rocksellout.com, you couldn’t make this stuff up "even if you tried".

And don't forget Hollywood depictions of future dystopia. See those street gangs that snarl from the subways? They could be Emo kids who were pushed too far.

Oh no. I couldn't finish reading the story. I feel ill. That's terrible.

..although I'm not surprised when I recall the sick, genuine fear for my life I felt on the streets of Pompey where it seemed that wearing flared jeans was enough of an excuse to get one's head kicked in (although if it wasn't that, another excuse could easily be found) following some warped logic of 9-to-12-year-old fashion consciousness.

Ultra-conformity mob-rule to such an extreme... and before we were even in our teens. Of course my parents refused to believe there was any real danger - and clothed me in Oxfam togs that were the equivalent of saying 'come and get me'. And the tactical manoeuvre of getting shaved head was sabotaged when my footwear was sandals.

I am not exaggerating that these thugs weren't yet teenagers. Maybe they were akin to some sort of inner-city Cargo Cult, misinterpreting what totems they saw their older brothers hold in esteem. This is my theory as to why the only acceptable dress was by Fred Perry or Lonsdale and crimson "stay-press" (I have an aversion to the phrase as we speak ... and can't bring myself to even investigate the correct spelling: is it meant to be 'Stapress'?); and why they wore badges that said "The Jam"; and why "Wellah" was considered the epitome of cool - even though this must have been after his group had broken up. And the music they liked was Spandau Ballet's "True" - which I can never free of these associations either.

Blimey I've just put myself on the psychiatrist's couch. Incorrectly or not, I think I still feel safer in a Bangkok back alley at 3am than I did in broad daylight passing the playpark back then.
